GREENHECK VARI-GREEN MOTOR

GREENHECK VARI-GREEN MOTOR

Greenheck introduced the fan industries first fully controllable, high efficiency, fractional horse power, electrically commutated motor (Vari-Green) in 2008.  From its original introduction, the VariGreen has been well received and has established a new benchmark.  It is now available in ¼, ½, ¾ and 1 Hp sizes.

The Greenheck Vari-Green motor utilizes Electronic Commutation in place of the traditional brushes to control motor rotation.  This brush free technology means no brushes to wear out and replace.  This offers high reliability and low maintenance in a cost effective, easy to control motor.  What does this mean to the end user and Greenheck Customer?

  • Increased Turndown: The brushless Vari-Green motor can take the place of a Permanent Split Capacitor (PSC) motor and speed controller.  The Vari-Green motor provides a turn down up 80% while a PSC motor is limited to 30% turndown.
  • Energy Efficiency: The Vari-Green motor runs on a fraction of the energy that a traditional motor does.  Payback could be as low as less than 1 year.
  • Controllability:  The Vari-Green motor can be configured to operate with a 0-10 volt control signal, a remote potentiometer or an on-board dial adjustment screw.   This means that you can integrate the Vari-Green motor with any controller that can provide a 0-10 volt controls signal.  There is a also a “two speed setting” controller available.

Accessories:

The Vari-Green motor can be ordered with a variety of options and accessories.  The options for each product that the motor is offered on are fully available and a new fan with the Vari-Green motor can be shipped in as little as 1 day fully configured.  Along with the fan and motor Greenheck offers a fully integrated controls package.

  • Full package:  Greenheck provides the fan, controller, transformers, and sensors.
  • Easy installation:  Just connect the wires for power, and control signal to the prelabeled locations
  • Usages:  Controls package can be used to control duct pressure in a variety of systems.  The controller can be linked to a pressure transducer and the fan to maintain a constant pressure in the duct work.  This system can be used as a commercial dryer booster, high rise residential kitchen exhaust or high rise bathroom booster exhaust.

Functionality:

Option #1

Use the Vari-Green motor in place of smaller fractional HP motors with a rheostat speed controller.  The EC motor can take the place of shaded pole and Permanent Split Capacitor motors in conjunction with a rheostat speed controller.  This gives a wider turn down range and better energy efficiency then the speed controller option.

  • Motor holds a constant Speed even if the system resistance changes from filters getting dirty, etc.
  • Energy usage decreases as speed is reduced while speed controllers often increase energy consumption when turned below full speed.
  • Higher efficiency: 85-90% compared to 70% for PSC motors
  • Longer life: Bearing life for the EC motor is in excess of an L10 life of 1,000,000 hours

Option #2

The Vari-Green motor can be ordered with a controls option.  The 24 volt power signal can be used to turn  the motor on/off.  The motors speed can be regulated with a 2-10 volt controls signal.  With a fully integrated controls package the Vari-Green motor can take the place of a 3 phase motor and VFD (variable Frequency Drive).

  • Control:  The Vari-Green motor can be fully integrated into a building automation system.
  • Energy Savings: Turn the motor down or off when not in use to save energy
  • Reduced cost: controls are built into the motor no need to purchase a VFD and install extra components.
  • Longer Life: Bearing life L10 in excess of 1,000,000 hours at full speed, no shaft current concerns like with a VFD.
